Earth Day No Prep Lessons: 4 Quick Activities to Celebrate Our Planet

Earth Day is just around the corner, on April 22nd and it’s the perfect opportunity to teach your students about the wonders of our planet. However, planning engaging lessons can be time-consuming, especially when you’re already juggling a packed schedule.

That’s why I’ve put together this list of  NO-prep Earth Day activities that are
sure to inspire your students to appreciate and protect the earth. These
hands-on, interactive lessons will get your students excited without requiring
hours of planning on your part.

Adopt a Tree

Take your class on a nature walk around your school’s campus or a nearby
park. Have each student choose a tree to “adopt” and observe it.
Students can sketch their tree, measure its trunk, and record other details
about its size, shape, and ecosystem. Bring the class back together to share
their findings and discuss the important role trees play in maintaining a
healthy environment.

Create a Recycling Rap

Assign small groups the task of composing a catchy, rhyming tune that
educates their peers about the 3 R’s: reduce, reuse, recycle. Encourage them to
get creative with their lyrics and incorporate facts about recycling and environmental
conservation. After rehearsing, each group can perform their recycling rap for
the class.

Conduct a Schoolwide Waste Audit

Split your students into teams and have them conduct a thorough waste
audit around your school’s campus. Provide them with data collection sheets to
record the types and amounts of trash, recycling, and compost they find. After
the audit, bring the class together to analyze their findings and brainstorm
ways the school community can reduce waste.

Outdoor Scavenger Hunt

Take your students on a nature walk around your school’s grounds or a
nearby park. Create a scavenger hunt checklist with items for them to find.

As they explore, have students work in pairs or small groups to check
off the items on their list. Bring the class back together to share their
discoveries and discuss how the different elements they found are
interconnected parts of a healthy ecosystem.

but deliver maximum impact. By engaging your students in fun, creative
projects, you’ll empower them to become champions for our planet.
