Snow powder - making instant hot snow

What you need:

·      snow powder

·      glass cups

·      Warm water

·      food coloring

What to do?

·      Add a drop of food coloring into each glass.

·      Put a teaspoon full of snow powder in each glass.

·      Quickly fill each glass with warm water.

What is happening?

Our powder is a polymer that is able to absorb liquids in a super-efficient way, sometimes up to 500 times its weight or fifty times its volume, meaning that one glass of this stuff can absorb fifty glasses of water.

A polymer (from Greek Poly– many Mer– parts) is a material made of a very long chain of molecules connected together, like a string of  pearls. The beads are the small molecules, so you can make many different types of polymers, made from different types of molecules. Side chains can also be attached to add even more special qualities, possibilities are infinite. No wonder so many things aroud us are actually polymers… from buble-gum to footballs, in fact, anything made of plastic is a polymer .

The snow powder polymer is made of a molecule that binds water, its a molecular sponge!

Otherwise known as a gel – a combination of a solid and a liquid. These absorbent materials have different uses, the most common of which is in diapers for babies, in addition, they are used to absorb spillages of  dangerous substances, to mix with soil for plants and of course for playing.
